Opening coconuts are tricky. Both the coconut water and "meat" are delicious and healthful. Here's a fail proof way to get them open.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Young coconut
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Mug or short glass
  • Knife with a pointy edge
  • Plastic shopping bag
  • Tablespoon
  1. Step 1

Remove the plastic covering. Turn the flat side of the coconut towards you (flat face up).Use the pointed end of the knife to drill a hole in the flat surface. Use the hammer to hit the back of the knife until shell has been penetrated.

  2. Step 2

Rotate the knife until the hole is clear and then take it out. Turn the coconut over onto the glass to drain. It will take 2-3 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Drink the juice. It's sweet and very alkinizing for the body.

  4. Step 4

Put the drained coconut in the shopping bag and hit it against a hard surface until it cracks. We bang our coconuts on the garage floor. Once it cracks, pull it apart and scoop the "jelly" out to eat. Don't worry about the color of the jelly. It would smell rancid if it were spoiled. Enjoy!
