Things You'll Need:
- Qualified Club Fitter or golf professional
-
Step 1
1st - Have the golf professional or trained club fitter check your swing speed. The swing speed can vary roughly between 45 mph to 135 mph. The swing speed helps determine the type of shaft that you will need. For example, ultra lite, woman's flex, regular, stiff, or extra-stiff shaft. Also, it will help determine if graphite or steel shafts are best for you. 2nd - Your height or your reach (arms extended towards the ground and measuring the distance to the ground).
-
Step 2
3rd - Grip size, a lot of people forget about the grip size. For example, I am a women who is taller than average (5' 8") and I need to use men's golf clubs and men's grips are best for me. When I use a women's club they feel short and the grips are too small for my hands.

Step 3
4th - One of the most important club fitting criterions is the lie angle at impact. Most of the stores only carry standard lie angles unless you ask for a specific lie angle. Here's are examples of a lie angles: 2F (means 2 degrees flat lie), 2U (2 degrees upright), 4 degrees upright, etc. Even though the lies angle degrees seem very small, 2 or 4 degrees in these examples, they really do make a difference with ball striking. Here is how the lie angle check should be done. Tape is placed on the club face and sometimes the sole of the club (7 iron, 5 iron, driver). Then, hit balls and see where they strike on the tape. Your experienced club fitter and/or golf professional will explain what you need.
5th and last - Weight of club. Stronger golfers may need a heavier club and the opposite is true for weaker or more novice golfers.
