When it comes to baby safety it is our #1 concern as parents. When I was shopping for a baby crib I found a lot of scary information and thought I would share some steps that will help save you from buying a unsafe baby crib.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing to do when considering a baby crib is to read the reviews. You will find so much information that will steer you away from some cribs and towards others. Also get information about the manufacture of the crib.

  2. Step 2

Next take a list of baby cribs to a store that has the baby cribs set up. This way you can see how sturdy they are. Make sure that the crib is solid and the mattress fits snug. The bars need to be no more than 2 and 3/8 inch apart. You can also test how easily the side Also look out for baby cribs that will make it easy for your child to climb out.

  3. Step 3

When you get your crib home make sure you have all pieces and nothing is broken. If there is a problem I would try to return to the store. I have heard of nightmare stories with baby crib manufactures not replacing broken pieces. Know put the crib together. If you don't trust you can do it right enlist help. This not a time for you to learn how to do it yourself.

  4. Step 4

I do not suggest buying a baby crib used but if you do go to the cpsc web site to make sure that the baby crib was not recalled and meets standards. Make sure that there are no screws loose, pieces missing, broken parts, springs loose, or paint chipping off. It is also wise to research the model before buying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Really spend time reading reviews. I learned a lot.
  • Buy a crib to be a crib not because it is pretty, turns into something else or stores stuff. Spend the extra money you would spend on the bells and whistles for a more sturdy crib.
  • Never put stuffed animals, pillows, blankets, bumpers or any other item that may suffocate your baby.
