How to Defragment your Hard Drive

This article is for those who wish to defragment their hard drive. Defragmenting your hard drive regulary is advised as it will keep your hard drive running at it's optimum performace.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  1. Step 1

    Switch your computer on as normal.

  2. Step 2

    Click Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk defragmenter

  3. Step 3
     

    A new window will open up. You will now have a list inside the main area of the window. Select the hard drive/s you wish to defragment by clicking them, if more than 1 hold 'ctrl' whilst clicking the second one.

  4. Step 4
     

    Now click 'Action' located at the top of the window, a drop down list will appear, select 'Defragment'.

  5. Step 5

    Now wait until it has completed Analyzing and deframenting. This can be a lengthy process so you might want to take a break for a bit. It's best to leave the computer to carry out defragmenting without opening other programs etc.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not continue use of computer whilst defragmenting.
  • You might want to take a break 30-40 minutes as it is a lengthy process
