Whether you are trying to save money on groceries or simply trying to stop wasting food, there a way to save money with a rubber spatula. A rubber spatula? To save money? Yes! Use it properly and you will not only save money with a rubber spatula--you'll become a little less wasteful too.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dig through your kitchen utensil drawers and find a rubber spatula. Can't find one? Check your cupboards too, your rubber spatula may be hiding in a cluster of other lesser used kitchen tools. Still can't find it? No worries. Rubber spatulas are available at any store that carries kitchen utensils. Try Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, or even Kohls. Look online too. Good brands to search for include Rubbermaid, le Crueset, and Pampered Chef.

  2. Step 2

Wash your rubber spatula and keep it in an easy to access spot.

  3. Step 3

Use the rubber spatula every time you open a jar or can of something that tends to stick to the sides (such as tomato sauce or refried beans.) The angled, rubber tip of the spatula allows you to scrape almost every trace of food from the inside of a jar or can, thus preventing you from throwing food away. You paid for it, you might as well get every speck of food from the container.

  4. Step 4

Keep it handy when baking too. Use your rubber spatula to scrape bowls clean when you bake muffins or cake. The amount of extra batter you scrape from the bowl can be significant enough to prevent you from having to bake another whole batch of cupcakes!

  5. Step 5

Save money with a rubber spatula by keeping it at arm's length every time you are in the kitchen. You'll be surprised how often you use it, and how much the savings can add up to be over time!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep several rubber spatulas in the kitchen of various sizes. Having a very small one on hand will help you to scrape the insides of very small cans such as a tomato paste can.

on 2/16/2009 I do this, scrape that jar or bowl, but then I also lick my plate. What can I say? There are benefits of living alone (with a cat). 5*
