  1. Step 1

If you are the victim of identity theft there are a few steps you can take to further protect yourself.

  2. Step 2

First thing is to get a copy of your credit report. Once you are the victim of credit or identity theft you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report. You can call the credit bureaus (equifax, experian and transunion) and advise you would like a copy due to identity theft.

  3. Step 3

Next step is to call all your credit card companies and advise of the identity theft situation and have your MMN changed to a personal password. This will further protect you because if the thief is going to try and access your account, they wont know the new personal password that was created. Also, if it makes you more comfortable you can have your credit card # changed as well. Next thing is to call the credit bureuas and have a FRAUD ALERT placed. You can have a 90 day fraud alert or a 7 year security freeze. Basically, its a few lines on your credit report that state *****victim of identity theft, do not issue any credit without contacting the true person at 123-456-7891.*********This way no new credit will be issued in your name unless you are contacted first. This will stop any new identity theft from happening and keep your credit once again safe.
