How to Treat Vomiting
Usually, vomiting is a sign of illness-however, vomiting might also be due to ingestion of toxic substances like too much alcohol or food poisoning. The symptoms will normally resolve in a few days, but in cases of serious medical conditions this could lead to dangerous consequences if you do not seek medical attention.

Assist the person onto the ground and lie him in the recovery position by turning him onto his left side. This will prevent suffication, choking and regurgitation of the vomit.

Prevent dehydration by giving plenty of fluids. Gradually build up the fluid intake. Water, fruit juice or ice chips are good choices. Do not give carbonated drinks, caffeinated beverages or alcohol. Electrolyte fluids such as Gaterade or Smart Water will help to restore the electrolyte and fluid balance in the body after a bout of vomiting.

Do not give food to the vicitm until the vomiting has stopped for several hours. Soft foods like jello or soup should be given if the person is hungry. Stay away from solids until the next day when the body has had time to recover.

If the vomiting lasts for more than 24 hours, then you should seek medical attention. Check for signs that could be causing the vomiting, for example, head injury, bleeding, fever, dehydration, dry mouth, diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps.

Take a baby under the age of 6 months to see a doctor if the vomiting lasts for more than 6 hours, especially if there are other signs present such as fever, diarrhea, bleeding or dehydration.

Allow the person to rest or sleep after the vomiting episode. The body need to relax and recover.
Keep a bucket and towels within reach in case of another episode of vomiting.
