Chocolate Egg

Do you love chocolate eggs and want to create one of your own?

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Egg-shaped chocolate/candy mold
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Silicon spatula or pastry brush
  1. Step 1

Have you ever bought a chocolate/candy mold? They are very inexpensive and can be found at specialty cake or baking shops. You can also order them online (try sugarcraft.com). When you choose which mold you want, the most fun egg-shaped one is the largest one! It all depends on what you want your end result to be. Get your mold and prepare it by making sure it is not wet at all! Water will make chocolate seize and be completely unusable so make sure your mold and all brushes/utensils are not wet at all!

  2. Step 2

Pour your chocolate chips (one bag should be enough but you might want two just in case) into a microwave-safe bowl and melt them in the microwave, 10 seconds at a time. Stir after each 10-second increment. When the chocolate chips are glossy, they are probably ready. Stir thoroughly and be sure all the chocolate chips are melted. If not, go in 5 second increments until all are melted. Then gather your brush (silicon or otherwise)...

  3. Step 3

Brush the chocolate into the mold, creating layers of chocolate by letting it sit and harden a little after each layer. Be sure by the end, you have at least a 1/4" thick layer inside so it is sturdy when you later remove it from the mold. By the way, semi-sweet chocolate chips are recommended for use because milk chocolate chips melt too easily when touched. You could use white chocolate chips too if you prefer. After your first egg-half is thick enough, let it sit out for awhile or stick in the fridge to harden completely.

  4. Step 4

Next you want to remove the one egg half you've created from the mold. You can usually bend the mold a little and it will pop out but that might be a little risky in case it cracks! It depends on your comfort level. You can also lightly dip it in some water (the mold-side not the chocolate-side!) to warm up/soften until you can bend and pop it out. Don't worry if it isn't perfect around the edges. You will be smoothing this out later. And as always with chocolate, you can remelt and try again! Once it's out, wipe it down with a paper towel to remove specks of chocolate. Don't use water!

  5. Step 5

Repeat the above steps with the mold for your second egg half. Then fill the egg with something of your choice - a nice note folded up, a very lightweight toy or gift (wrapped in foil or plastic to protect it).

  6. Step 6

When you have both molds, take a cookie sheet and place it in a warm oven, maybe 200 degrees. When the cookie sheet is warmed up, very carefully and very quickly (and with a firm grip on the egg half) take one egg half and place it hollow-side-down on the cookie sheet. This will melt the connection points. Set it down and quickly do the same with the other half. Then stick your gift/note inside and quickly press together! They will melt and smoosh together nicely. You can, at this point, try to smooth down the imperfections from your time molding it. Then set in the fridge to harden and then remove and enjoy!
