Simple every day things anyone can do to reduce our energy consumption, carbon footprint, & utility bills. This is a reminder of how all the little things we do to contribute to the conservation & protection of our environment can add up to great accomplishments if we all work together to achieve common goals.

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 minutes of your time
  • an open mind
  • a little patience
  • a willingness to contribute to the efforts of so many other people who have the desire to help improve the overall well being of our environment
  • a passion for conserving the natural beauty of our planet & it's countless inhabitants
  1. Step 1

    Please take a moment to read this. Think of some of the things you might consider changing in your household to head in the right direction. The direction of Going Green.

    Simple things we can do to reduce our
    energy consumption, carbon footprints &
    save money on our utility bills:

    Adjust H2O heater to 120 degrees
    No screensaver, turn off computer as often as possible
    Low flow shower heads, sink faucets & toilets
    Weatherize doors & windows to close gaps & save electricity
    Insulate attic (use treated recycled newspaper insulation from the home improvement store)
    Change AC filter
    Change air filter in car to increase fuel efficiency
    Inflate car tires to increase gas mileage
    Buy more local products
    Buy 100% post consumer recycled paper (printer, notebooks, tissue, toilet paper, paper towels & even greeting cards)
    Reload plastic merchandise credit or gift cards as most stores don’t recycle them
    Remember to bring your re-usable shopping bags everywhere, not only to the grocery stores
    Buy a reusable bottle & mug for hot & cold drinks, to reduce plastic & styro foam containers
    If you don’t keep receipts from the gas station or ATM, press the NO receipt button
    Use fluorescent compact light bulbs
    Take shorter showers, reduce H2O consumption as often as possible
    Only run the dishwasher when it’s full
    Buy minimally packaged products or buy in bulk whenever possible
    Don’t idol your car w/the exception of traffic, turn off the car engine if you must wait more than 1 minute
    Use a push lawn mower (sell the gas powered 1)
    Un-plug electronic devices when not in use: DVD players, video game consoles, printers, lamps, toaster, microwave, electric toothbrush, razor, & cell phone chargers, hair dryer, TV’s that aren’t used frequently, fans, laptop charger, night light, toys, power tool chargers, etc.
    Un-plug everything possible when leaving for an extended period of time including washer & dryer & cable boxes If you have an adjustable bed & always use the same setting there is no need for it to be constantly plugged in. Turn fans, lights & TV’s off when no one’s in the room
    Try to eliminate plug-in air fresheners. Replace them w/soy or natural wax candles
    If you must use night lights, try those that use solar or battery power & since it wouldn’t make sense to un-plug alarm clocks often, use those that are battery powered instead of a typical energy wasting electric one. Re-use plastic bottles for cleaning products, toiletries & cosmetics (use glass jars or bottles for harsh or strong chemicals that might leak through or dissolve typical plastic such as greased lightening, bleach, lime away, products that un
