Knit Your Own Robeez
Knit Your Own Robeez

My daughter loves her Robeez shoes, but being the knitting fiend that I am, I just HAD to try to create a knitted version! Here's how to do it:

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • knitting needles size 5 (or size needed to obtain gauge 6sts=1")
  • knitting needles size 1
  • yarn needle
  • yarn (I used Caron Simply Soft in shades of pink, brown, and white)
  • crochet hook size G
  • scissors
  1. Step 1

These are made of 4 parts: the top flap, heel, sole, and embellishment (in this case, a flower). When increasing (inc), knit into the front and back of the next stitch. When decreasing (dec), simply knit two stitches together (k2tog). When working stockinette stitch (stst), knit one row, purl one row, repeat. When working garter stitch, knit all rows.

  2. Step 2

    TOP FLAP
Cast on 7 sts. Purl one row.
ROW ONE: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1
ROW TWO AND ALL EVEN ROWS: purl across
ROW THREE: k1, inc 2, k across to last three stitches, inc 2, k1
FIVE: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1
SEVEN: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1. Repeat this row until you have 27 stitches on your needles.
Work in stst fo 10 rows, then bind off.

  3. Step 3

    HEEL
Cast on 40 stitches with size 5 needles and pink yarn.
Beginnig with a knit row, work in stst for seven rows. Switch to size 1 needles and purl one row with white yarn.
Work a k1, p1 rib tightly for 9 rows. Bind off in rib.

  4. Step 4

    SOLE
With size 5 needles and brown, cast on 7 stitches.
ROW ONE: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1
ROW TWO AND ALL EVEN ROWS: knit across
ROW THREE: k1, inc 2, k across to last three stitches, inc 2, k1
FIVE: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1
SEVEN: k1, inc 1, k across to last two stitches, inc 1, k1
You should have 17 stitches on you needles now.
Work in knit rows for 40 rows (20 garter ribs).
DECREASE ROW ONE: k 1, dec 1, k across to last two stitches, dec 1, k1
    EVEN ROWS: knit across
THREE: k1, dec 2, knit across to last three stitches, dec 2, k1
FIVE: k1, dec 1, knit across to last two stitches, dec 1, k1
    Bind off.

  5. Step 5

    EMBELLISHMENT
With crochet hook, cast on 3 sts with brown, join to form loop. Work six dbl crochet sts in the loop. Attach white, and in the top of every dbl crochet, work ch 2, 2 dbl crochet, ch 2, slip stitch to the next loop.

  6. Step 6

Stitch the finished flower to the top flap.

  7. Step 7

Stitch the heel flap to the sole using yarn needle.

  8. Step 8

Stitch the top flap to the sole. Note that the sides of the top flap will overlap the heel flap 3/4"- 1".

  9. Step 9

Using the strand of yarn from the ribbing bind-off, tie the tops of each corner of the ribbing together, and stitch to the underside of the top flap. Voila! Knitted Robeez- style baby shoes!

Tips & Warnings
  • If your baby is in the standing/walking phase, you may choose to make the sole slip-proof. To do this, use puff paint to apply little dots to the soles. Allow to dry completely.
  • If you can't knit the ribbing tight enough, you may want to knit in some elastic thread.
  • Experiment with other embellishments: butterflies, ladybugs, sailboats, sports, etc., would all be cute. Or, try a fair isle pattern, or initials!
  • I'd love to see what you come up with- so post your pictures!

on 11/14/2009 what size needles did you use for the top flap? I used a size 1, but I'm thinking it is too small now that I've made the top flap. Thanks.

on 2/27/2009 I am a beginning knitter, but am having trouble with step 4. I have been alternating knitting and knitting with an increase for 8 rows, so this generates a garter stitch. Then you say to work in stst. I am getting a distinct pattern difference in my work where your pic looks like a smooth and flat surface.
