Things You'll Need:
- car or transportation (sorry its a metropolis and we are too spread out to easily find accessible work)
- phone
- internet
- nice clothing
-
Step 1
Don't freak out. Finding a career in the 2000's is like finding a needle in a hay stack. If you're like most students, you're looking for a job and not a career.
-
Step 2
Start looking and don't stop. I like to give myself at least 6 months to find a new job in phoenix. Believe me, I use every day to my advantage. Find multiple sites to look for a job, not just one side. Look in free newspapers and check around your local college. There are newspapers all over for employment.
-
Step 3
APPLY APPLY APPLY! Apply to anything you think you could stand for a few months. Not only does this look good when you become skilled in random jobs, but if you have a good relationship with your bosses, you'll get recommendations and possible pay increases later on in life.
When looking for a job, apply to at least 10 jobs a day. -
Step 4
Make an email account just for jobs. This is an important organizational tool that I've learned to never live with out. When you apply to multiple jobs, they usually reply at the same time 3 weeks later. It's annoying but that's life. if jobs don't reply to your original email, its perfectly professional to request that employers further explain the position.
-
Step 5
Look for small businesses instead of corporations. Retail experience is something I think everyone needs, but if you've done it for years, look for small businesses where you can easily gain advancement. Clothing stores etc have a low ceiling for advancement, and have poor employee care packages. Small businesses are usually privately owned and have a more layed back atmosphere as well.
-
Step 6
Go back to an old position. As the recession gets more severe, job searched are gonna come up bare. if you have a good relationship with your old employer, ask them if you can come back as an on call temp. You'll work the ours no one does, but it does mean extra cash.
-
Step 7
Drive out of your way. until we see fuel back up to 4.00...I would count it a blessing that we can drive where ever we want without breaking the bank too much. If you have to commute to a job that you can see yourself tolerating for a while, DO IT. If you aren't finding jobs near your house, that means they aren't hiring. Someone else is gonna sweep up the job if you don't.
-
Step 8
Travel. If you are 21 or older, it may be time to travel. Generation Cold Y has little to no jobs available for them and its only gonna worse for us. Traveling to spa's or resorts around the country is a nice way to make money and not have to worry about expensive board. If you are one to travel and live independently, then this will be an option.
