In this article you will learn how to sell a car with a salvage title.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • The vehilce title
  • Approx. $150
  1. Step 1

The first step in selling a car with a salvage title is to have the vehicle assessed by an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified mechanic to ensure that any repairs that were made to the car were done appropriately. This inspection should cost approximately $75. Make sure you keep a copy of the inspection. You can sell a salvage vehicle without making repairs, but you will most likely have to sell it to an auto salvage company or junk yard at a significant loss.

  2. Step 2

Next, spend about $25 and get the deluxe-type wash at a local car wash. If you want to spend the extra money and get the car fully detailed, expect to pay about $100. Then, put together a classified ad for your local paper, craigslist, etc. Don't mention the salvage status in your ad, but do put a price in the ad. Your vehicle should be significantly less money than other comparable vehicles with clean titles, so expect phone calls!

  3. Step 3

Finally, when prospective buyers come to look at the car, make sure to disclose the fact that the vehicle has a salvage title. Be sure to show them the inspection as well as any receipts for repairs. Also give the prospective buyer an opportunity to take the vehicle to their own mechanic. That's a reasonable request considering you are selling a vehicle with a salvage title. When you and the buyer have agreed to a price, collect the money in cash or cashier's check. Ensure that any bill of sale that you draw up makes note of the salvage title, and have the buyer sign it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Disclose the salvage title. Treat others the way you want to be treated!
  • Always get payment in cash or cashier's check and document the sale paying particular attention to disclosing the salvage title.

on 3/17/2009 Most States require that a salvage vehicle has to inspected by a state inspector before they can be titled. Still a good idea to let an independent mechanic check it out though, whether buying or selling it is always good to err on the side of caution.
