Things You'll Need:
- Time
- Parents help
-
Step 1
Think about what is realistic for your child's classroom and the amount of help you have from other parents and from the teacher. You can't probably do it all yourself and even if you do, you'll be so tired at the party you won't be able to enjoy yourself!
-
Step 2
In general, a classroom party should last about an hour and at the end of the day is ideal. A table for food, an area for activities, and then a craft to do and take home is also fun. Let's take it step by step.
-
Step 3
Food: Have parents help with this! If you do have enough help, it's good to balance healthy food with something sweet. How about someone brings sugar cookies in heart-shapes or pre-baked cupcakes. They can either be pre-frosted or not and the kids can decorate them at their desks (each area has a bowl of frosting OR each kid is given a plastic knife-ful of frosting to use on their plate). They can then be given a bowl of candy to share to decorate their cupcakes or cookies. In addition, fruit like grapes are great because they don't require cutting and they won't go brown. However, apples are also fun for kids to eat and require only minimal cutting and can be done in the classroom (away from the kids). Juice is good too. To avoid spills, ask a parent to bring juice boxes or pouches. Be sure to have napkins too!
-
Step 4
Activities: Depending on the age, you could play any number of games! Sweethearts bingo, charades, scavenger hunt, musical hearts (instead of musical chairs), candy walk (instead of a cake walk). Be sure if you are giving out prizes, it is done in a way that won't make anyone feel bad. And if possible, be sure each child "wins" a prize. Kids could also work on coloring pages or making Valentine's Day cards for a parent or grandparent (or neighbor). Ask your child's teacher if the school can provide the paper, glue, and markers for those things.
-
Step 5
Craft: If there is time, energy, and money to spare then a craft to take home would be fun. As mentioned above, cards are fun and seem to fit well with the theme and holiday. But what about a picture frame? Using popsicles sticks or tagboard cut-out with a magnet glued or stuck to the back would be fun and appreciated and your child can put a photo of inside. There are many sites with help - see below!
