In today's economy, it is more important than ever to find ways to reduce our overall cost of living. In addition, preserving our environment for our children and grandchildren is equally important. This article features a few key areas to think about when trying to make your home as energy efficient as possible.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Low-E Windows: The "E" stand for emissivity, and the thin metal coating applied to Low-E windows will allow light in but lessens the effect of the suns heat. They add energy efficiency in both hot and cold seasons, keeping heat out during the summer and in during the winter.

  2. Step 2

Heating and Cooling: Make sure that your home has the right size air conditions and heating systems. The performance and efficiency of these units will greatly enhance the efficiency and comfort of your home. If your systems are too small or too large, they will operate less efficiently, thereby increasing heating/cooling bills!

  3. Step 3

Lighting: It is important to make sure that as many hard-wired lights as possible are compact fluorescent lights (CFL's) in order to reduce energy consumption. Keep unnecessary lighting unplugged and turned off when not in use. Use dimmers to reduce watt usage.

  4. Step 4

Appliances: When purchasing appliances, always look for the ENERGY STAR rated appliances. These products meet strict guidelines approved by the EPA and other agencies, and often use 10-50 percent less energy and water than other models.
