Start an Online Book Club
Start an Online Book Club

An online book club is a great way to make new friends and read some fantastic books. An online book club combines the convenience of the web with the community of a traditional book club

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer with internet access
  • books
  1. Step 1

Start a blog or website committed to your book club. Setting up a forum is another good way to get ready for an online book club. Come up with a name.

  2. Step 2

Find a community. Publicize your book club. Join some forums, some egroups, and similar websites to find individuals who might be interested. You will need at least five members.

  3. Step 3

Decide on some guidelines. How will leaders be picked for each book? Who decides which books to read? The answers can either be decided by you or by the group as a whole. You also need to consider how the discussions will be set up, when the group will meet, and how each book will be divided up.

  4. Step 4

Choose the first book. Try to find books that will be easy for everyone to find. Brand new books, that may have a limited release at first, or older books may be hard for some members to get. Have members take a vote so that the book is one that almost everyone wants to read. Give members a few weeks to get the book before the discussion begins.

  5. Step 5

Many books that work well for book clubs have a section in the back of the book with discussion questions. These questions are a great place to start, especially if you (or other members) are new to book clubs and could use help coming up with discussion points.

  6. Step 6

Be very active in the discussion to keep it going. Work to keep members excited and interested. Continuously seek out new members. Make your online book club a fun and exciting group, and you will be rewarded with a loyal and active member list.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get so caught up in the work part of the club that you forget to enjoy yourself.
