Things You'll Need:
- teaching degree

Step 1
To become a teaching sub is quite simple. It varies from state to state; however, you must pass a background check. You must pass one from for a criminal history and another for child abuse. They take your fingerprints and you have to fill out the forms to complete the checks. There is generally a fee (usually anywhere from $25 to $50). It is a must to pass both these to be able to work in a school. Just like with other jobs you have to fill out an application as well.

Step 2
In some states, all that is required to become a sub is a college degree other states require a Masters. You just need to include your transcript with your application. Generally, teaching subs are people looking for permanent teaching jobs; however others can sub as well. I know someone who works with the sports teams after school and subs during the day for some extra money. It works out well because she gets more involved with the students/athletes, gets to know the school better, and has something to do during the day. One plus of subbing has a teacher is that you get to pick the days you want to work.

Step 3
When you get into a classroom it is essential to set the tone early. Generally, if you are nice to the students they will be nice to you. A lot of times, if you are not planning on being a teacher, high school is best. The younger the age you sub, the more the teacher you are subbing for expects you to do. In high school, generally you just do handouts and watch movies along with some teaching duties. It is a common misconception that substitutes are mean old ladies, lol. You have to remember that not all kids are bad, don’t get me wrong, you have to keep your eyes open and be ready for anything, but in general they are not that bad. If you try to stay in the same few schools you will get to know the students and things always go easier then. Just like the common saying: be nice to others and they will be nice to you. It even works in the schools with students.
