Step 1
Make sure your credit card offers rewards for using it, whether it be points, cash back, miles, etc.
-
Step 2
Do your research. Get online and read the specifics of your credit card's reward policy. You will find that many credit cards offer higher rewards for shopping at certain types of stores or spending your money in certain categories. You should always use your credit card on things that will earn you extra rewards!
-
Step 3
Check to see if your credit card has an online shopping rewards program. Most credit cards will have a site that offers extra cash back for shopping online at certain retailers. For example, if you have a Chase card, you can go to Chase.com/rewardsplus to earn extra cash back from just about any store you can imagine. They offer anywhere from 2% to 18% cash back for purchases made online through their rewards site. Be aware that you MUST click on the retailer and enter their site through the credit card's rewards site or you will not get credit.
-
Step 4
With most credit cards it pays to save up your cash or points, rather than redeeming them as soon as you have enough. Generally with points, the more you have, the better the value you will get when you redeem them. When it comes to cash back, a lot of credit cards will throw in extra money if you save up a certain amount before redeeming. With my credit card, if I save $200 up in cash back before redeeming, they will send me a check for $250. This is a great deal!
