Things You'll Need:
- saline solution
- humidifier
- decongestants
-
Step 1
First, get a humidifier to use when the air is dry. Keeping your sinuses moist helps them to drain on their own better. I turn it on at night when sleeping as that's when my sinuses bother me the most.
-
Step 2
Next, buy some saline solution. It is available at any drug store. Saline solution is a natural decongestant that works as both a moisturizer and a decongestant. It's a very inexpensive, natural alternative that you can use daily or even several times a day to help your sinuses to stay clear. To use, tilt your head back and spray 2 times in each nostril. You may taste the salty solution as the excess drains away

Step 3
When congestion is severe, take a hot shower or bath and place hot compresses with a wet washcloth on your face. Get the water as hot as you can take it. Focus on placing the wet washcloth on your forehead and upper cheeks. Do this for at least 10 minutes. Continue to use the saline solution and the humidifier.
-
Step 4
Another strategy that works well when the congestion lingers is to heat water to boiling on the stove. Turn the heat off and then stand close to the stove and bend over to where you can feel and easily breathe the steam coming off the stove. Breathe as deeply as you can to allow the steam to work through your sinus cavities.

Step 5
Finally, nasal decongestants or sinus headache medication can be used simultaneously safely with any or all of the above methods to clear stubborn nasal congestion.
