Things You'll Need:
- Patience
- Be observant
- Be available
-
Step 1
Cats communicate vocally: It is said that cats vocalize 30 different sounds or more. Each cat is different and some are more vocal than others. Cats also communication through body language. Because human tend to respond more to sounds, they usually use that way to communicate with us.
-
Step 2
Cats communicate through body language: I tend to notice body language as well. It is almost like we communicate telepathically, for the lack of a better word. There are times when I am sitting at the computer and I can feel that one of the cats is sitting behind me. I turn around and sure enough Glory or Oreo are there just staring me down. Once I ask what do you want, they begin to tell me.
-
Step 3
I want to eat: This is an easy one. Usually, when a cat is hungry he/she will meow as they walk toward the kitchen or the place where they are fed. They will intermittently look back to make sure you are following them.
-
Step 4
I want to get in your lap: My tom Oreo, doesn't just jump on my lap. I can see him making the decision to jump by looking at the chair next to me and then my lap. He will do this a few time and if I don't make a face or a motion "no" he will jump on my lap to get some affection.
-
Step 5
I need you water: I dearly love my cats for have a one gallon water tank and can occasionally for to check to see if the water is fresh or need replacing. My girl, Glory, will sit by the water dish, until I notice there is not water. She will then wait patiently in the same spot, until I wash the dish and bring the water back.
-
Step 6
I am getting ready to have my kittens: When a queen (pregnant cat) was ready to have her kittens, she will prepare a place to do so. My cat tended to use my closet. When my queen was in labor, she would come to get me and walk me to the closet, looking back to make sure I was following her and then lay down in the closet. I then stayed with her until her kittens were born.
-
Step 7
Mommy I am lost: When my tom (male cat)sneaks out of the house, he can't figure out, exactly where the apartment is yet(we just moved). When I am ready for him to come home, I will call his name. Oreo will meow repeatedly every two seconds, like sonar, so I know where to locate him.

on 2/24/2009 Yep, you most definitely have had a few cats-you've got their behaviors pegged! I never knew about the queen telling you she's ready to have kittens because I always had "fixed/neutered" kitties. But I've rescued un-spayed kitties b4 and wondered, "is she pregnant?" well now I know what to look for. >>^..^<<

on 2/20/2009 My fat kitty is the loudest and most communicative of all of my cats. He will definately let you know if he is hungry or wants your attention.

on 2/12/2009 Thanks for the article. My cats are VERY verbal. They have no problem letting us know what they want or that they want it NOW! LOL 5*
