How to SIM Unlock Your T-Mobile G1 for Free
If you are a T-Mobile customer in good standing (you pay your bills on time) who has had active service with them for more than 40 days, call T-Mobile's customer service number and ask for the unlock code to the T-Mobile G1 phone. When you call in, they will verify your account information and get your phone's IMEI number.

Press the "Menu" button from the Home screen of your T-Mobile G1.

Press "Settings" -> "About Phone" -> "Status."

Scroll half way down the Status page to find your phone's IMEI number. Write that down.

Call T-Mobile customer service at 1-800-937-8997 (as of the date of this publication) or dial 611 from your G1. You can also go online and "Live Chat" with one of T-Mobile's customer service representatives.

Ask the customer service representative for your phone's unlock code and give him the IMEI number you wrote down. The customer service rep will fill out and process a request form. Once it is processed, he will email you the SIM unlock code with instructions on how to use it.

Turn off your phone once you have received your email with the unlock code from T-Mobile, remove your battery and replace your SIM card with one from another service provider.

Place the battery back in and turn your G1 back on.

Upon restart, your G1 will recognize the new SIM card and prompt you to enter the unlock code that you received. Enter your unlock code.

T-mobile appears to have two heads (a monster in my book), so if you have recently changed your plan from/to post-paid/prepaid, they will not honor your request, no matter how long you have been a customer.

there's an algorithym that calculates the difference in the imei against the service providers' locking codes, its not a standard code, all phones are different, many different models etc. so you can't just put in one magical all working code.
