1
Measure the space you have available for the washing machine. Ensure you do this especially if you're living in an apartment where you might only have very limited room. Buy one that actually fits in your available space.
-
2
Decide whether you would prefer a top-loading or front-loading washing machine. If you opt for a front-loading machine, know if you want a stackable machine or one that sits independently of the dryer. Your space requirements might impact this decision. Front-loading machines are more energy efficient, but often cost more money.

3
Talk to any of your friends who've bought washing machines recently, and see how happy they are with their purchases. A first-hand recommendation is worth much more than the sales pitch you'll receive once you start visiting appliance showrooms.
-
4
Decide if there are any special features you require in a machine. For instance, know if a heavy-duty wash cycle or a quick wash cycle is something you really require. Then, you only have to look at machines that meet that requirement.
-
5
Visit the appliance stores in your area. Talk to a sales associate and tell him the specifications of the washing machines you're looking for. Write down the model numbers of those that interested you.
-
6
Look up reviews online of the models you've shortlisted. Make a final purchase decision based on consumer reviews and the pricing of the machines to ensure you get the best deal available.

Tips & Warnings
If your dryer isn't quite worn out but is as old as the washing machine you're replacing, you might also want to consider replacing it also. Sometimes deals can be had on packaged units, and if your originals were the same age and the washer needed replacing, the dryer might not be far behind.
