It is possible to save money on your utility bill during a recession. By investing a little money and making a few househould changes, you can decrease your utility bill during the recession.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Low-Flow toilet
  • Energy Star double pane windows
  • Energy Star appliances
  1. Step 1

To save on your electric bill during a recession, replace all lightbulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs can be used in most light fixtures, lamps, chandeliers as well as outdoor lights. Compact fluorescent bulbs last longer and use less energy.

  2. Step 2

To save money on your water utility bill during a recession, decrease the amount of water you use in the home. Besides being generally conservative and turning off the water and making sure there are no dripping faucets and toilets, you can conserve water by purchasing a low-flow toilet. These low flush toilets use less water with each flush thereby saving many gallons of water per month.

  3. Step 3

To save money on your gas or electric utility bill for the furnace, upgrade to an Energy Star furnace. Make sure your air filter is changed regularly. Set the furnace at a moderatly comfortable setting and turn much cooler at night. Dress warmly and use blankets around the home to avoiding turning the thermostat up unnecessarily.

  4. Step 4

Replace old single pane windows with new double pane windows. Be sure to choose double pane windows that have an Energy Star rating.

Tips & Warnings
  • When replacing lightbulbs, do so as the old lightbulbs burn out. In this manner it will be more cost effective as you are not exchanging all of the lightbulbs at the same time.
