How to Apply For A Business License in The State of Georgia
In the state of Georgia the laws pertaining to business ownership are regulated by the Secretary of State. As of 2010, Secretary of State Brian P. Kemp requires all businesses to apply for their business license in the city or county in which the business operates. However, certain businesses, such as liquor stores and non-profit organizations, need additional licenses and documentation on both the state and federal levels.

1
Contact your local city or county government. If unsure as to whether your business is located in the city or county, call your local Chamber of Commerce to determine which governmental entity covers your area. In some parts of Georgia, the city and county have merged, as in Athens-Clarke County. In other parts, the city and county are separate entities. Unless your business resides within the city limits, it will be under the county's regulations.

Apply for your license for basic operations through the proper entity found in Step 1. You will need proof of ownership or a rental agreement listing the company's address. You may also need to provide proof that the location of the business is zoned for that business. Provide a copy of your driver's license or ID, as well as the license fee. Lastly, you will need to complete an application to get your business license.

Follow up your research on the Secretary of State's website. It lists all the businesses that will need additional licenses, such as barbers, accountants, dentists and cosmetologists, to name a few. If you need additional licenses to operate your business, complete the online application prior to opening your business.
