How to Prepare for Overnight Guests

Every host wants their guests to feel comfortable and relaxed. It's easy to do with a few tried and true tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure there are clean sheets on the guest bed. It should go without saying but I’m saying it anyway. If you change sheets after each guest (good for you) but your guest bed has been made up for a while unoccupied, turn the covers down and give the linens a light spray of Febreze. This will give them a fresh smell. The only thing worse than not changing the sheets is having your guests think you didn’t change the sheets!

  2. Step 2

Make sure the guest room has some basic touches like a box of tissues, a small trash can, and a clock. Sit in the room and ask yourself what you would need if you were staying in this room for the night. Check the lighting and place a bedside lamp in the room if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Offer your guests extra pillows and blankets.

  4. Step 4

Have some books and magazines of general interest in the guest room.

  5. Step 5

Remember that your guests will not be holed up in the guest room the entire time. Make sure the bathroom is clean, and that you have some gender neutral soaps, shampoos, and lotions. Make sure that products like toilet paper, cotton balls and swabs, feminine products, etc are easily accessible. Try to keep a spare toothbrush and sample sized tube of toothpaste on hand at all times.

  6. Step 6

Try to find out what your guests like to eat and have some of it on hand. If they are coffee drinkers, make sure you have coffee available. Have a middle of the road cereal (not kid fare but not overboard healthy) such as Cheerios, Raisin Bran, or Corn Flakes as well as fruit for a light breakfast.

  7. Step 7

Try not to stress out! Enjoy your guests and don’t sweat every detail. Most of the time the things we worry about most are the things no one else even notices.
