How to Make Healthy Collard Greens

Have you ever wonder how to make collard greens? Well, here is a step by step guide to making delicious and healthy collard greens in minutes.

Collard greens are a dark, leafy green vegetables which makes them rich in vitamins A, B6, E, calcium and folate. So eat up!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 bunches of collard greens
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • coarse sea salt (to taste)
  • freshly ground black pepper (to taste)'
  • hot sauce (to taste)
  • 1 smoked turkey leg
  • large stock pot
  • sharp knife
  • cutting board
  • colander
  1. Step 1

    Place the smoked turkey leg in the stockpot. Wash the collard greens thoroughly in cold water.

  2. Step 2

    Chop collard greens in small pieces. Put collards in the stock pot when finished.

  3. Step 3

    Chop the green bell pepper the same size as the collard greens are chopped. Place in the pot.

  4. Step 4

    Add salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Cover the collard greens in water. Cover with the lid. Turn heat on medium. Allow to cook for 3 hours or until tender.

    Drain and reserve most of the liquid.


    When the collard greens are nice and tender, break the meat from the turkey into the collard greens. Sprinkle with hot sauce (to taste). Re-season as necessary.

    This recipe serves 4.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you add too much hot sauce, add sugar to combat the spiciness.
  • I recommend using Frank' s Red Hot Sauce. It has heat as well as flavor.
  • Serve with macaroni & cheese and fried or smothered chicken for a traditional soul food meal.
  • Reserve the cooking liquid in case the collards are too dry after draining.
