Things You'll Need:
- A car
- Map or directions to destination
-
Step 1
When possible travel during daylight hours, especially if you are traveling on roadways that you are not familiar with.
-
Step 2
Always know your route ahead of time. You can use web sites such as www.mapquest.com, or if you are a member of an auto club such as AAA, they can supply you with directions. Or you can do it the old fashioned way, and use a road map. Many cars have navigation systems, but I prefer to have all of my directions in writing, ahead of time. I always write down my route changes on a separate sheet of paper so I can see them at a glance. Schedule rest stops at regular intervals, and if you need to consult a map, pull off of the road.
-
Step 3
Always have a designated person who will know your route and estimated time of arrival. Call this person anytime you stop, and let them know your location at that time. If you have to make unexpected route changes, let this person know that. If you need to use your cell phone, pull off.
-
Step 4
If you must travel at night, any scheduled (or unscheduled) stops should be in a well lighted area where there are other people present. Never tell strangers that you are traveling alone.
-
Step 5
If your trip is a drive that takes longer than one day - PLAN AHEAD - Calculate what your location will be at the end of the day, and make hotel reservations in advance. I have found that the well known chains are usually safe and clean. Request a room as close to the registration office as possible. Once again, never tell strangers that you are traveling alone. Always let your designated person know where you will be staying for the night. It is also a good idea to give that person the phone number of the hotel.
