In this article you will learn how to effectively train your puppy to sleep in a crate at night.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crate
  • Cushion
  • Recently worn tee shirt
  • Towel or blanket large enough to cover the crate
  1. Step 1

Place a cushion inside your puppies crate so that it has a soft and comfortable place to sleep. You will also want to cover the cushion with a recently worn tee shirt because puppies are more likely to sleep away from their owner if they can still smell their owners scent throughout the night (this is a key step).

  2. Step 2

When you are ready to go to sleep, place your puppy inside the crate and close the door. Place a blanket over the crate in order to create a dark environment. This way, your puppy will not wake up at the break of dawn when the sun begins to shine through the window.

  3. Step 3

IGNORE the whining and whimpers that will inevitably peruse throughout the first few nights of your puppy's crate training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Establish a routine and be consistent!
  • If you give in and let it sleep with you, you will in effect be reinforcing the undesirable behavior.
