Remove Paint From a Wood Trim

Whether you just painted a room and spilled a little bit on the trim, or want to completely remove all of the paint from wood trim, this is the article for you!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor Blade
  • Rubbing Alcohol or Goof Off!
  • Microfiber cloth or wire brush
  1. Step 1

Clean the area with soap and water to remove any excess dirt or paint (if newly spilled).

  2. Step 2

Using a microfiber cloth, add a dime sized amount of rubbing alcohol or Goof Off! to the cloth.

  3. Step 3

With the wet area of the cloth, rub the paint that you would like remove until you see the color of the paint coming off onto the cloth, and starting to smear on the trim. (Don't worry, the smear will wipe off once you use a clean piece of microfiber cloth to wipe the area.)

  4. Step 4

Using a razor blade, place the edge against the unwanted paint, hold it at a 45 degree angle, and apply slight pressure, and slide the blade along the area where you want paint removed. Make sure to only take off the layer of excess paint. If the paint is old and dried into the trim, you may need to take a layer of the original paint or wood off as well.

  5. Step 5

If the razor blade removed all excess paint then you are done.

If origninal trim paint, or wood was removed with the razor, you can use wood putty to fill in any gaps that were created in the wood, and then repaint or touch up areas that the razor may have caused damage.

    Good Luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have unwanted paint that has been dried for a while, you might want to use a wire brush instead of microfiber cloth.
  • Steps 2 and 3 may need to be repeated multiple times. Don't worry if it seems like it is taking a long time, it isn't an easy process. It requires lots of elbow grease.
  • If you would like paint removed from an entire piece of wood trim, replace the rubbing alcohol and Goof Off! listed above with paint remover, and make sure to use a wire brush instead of microfiber cloth.
  • Use caution when working with rubbing alcohol and Goof Off! Make sure to be in a well ventilated area and read all warnings on packages.
