Pirates are becoming increasingly popular due to the movies and more children want to dress as pirates. While it is possible to purchase pirate costumes, there is no need, as the can be cheaply made at home. Homemade pirate costumes are special to the child because they can help in the design process. Forget spending a fortune on a costume this year and use this guide to create a fun, easy and inexpensive pirate costume.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Old black red shirt
  • Old black pants
  • Black fabric for sash
  • Bandanna
  • Tall boots
  • Plastic pirate sword
  • Eye patch
  1. Step 1

Partially cut the sleeves with scissors. Rip the sleeves off the shirt by hand. This will give it a rough and ragged look. Cut wide triangles out of the bottom of the shirt. Next cut the collar off the shirt. Cut this right under the seam so that it isn't too wide.

  2. Step 2

Cut the legs of the pants approximately 4 inches below the knee. Pull on the loose strands to create a ragged and worn look. You may have to make a few small cuts and rip the strips off by hand.

  3. Step 3

Cut a piece of fabric so that it will wrap around the waist twice. You will loop this around the waist and tie in a knot around the hip. Make sure there is enough fabric that it hangs down to approximately the knee, or just above.

  4. Step 4

Put on boots. These can be black or brown. They should be tall enough so that the rim goes just under the pants.

  5. Step 5

Fold the bandanna in half. Place the folded end against the forehead. Wrap the bandanna over the head and bring the sides straight back. Tie in a knot at the nape of the neck.

  6. Step 6

Cut a small slit in the fabric belt at the hip. It should be just large enough to allow the blade of the plastic sword to slide through. Place the sword on the hip by inserting it through the fabric. Put the eye patch on either eye.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adjust the length of fabric according to the height of the child. Use different colors based on personal tastes or favorites of the child. Use the bandanna as a headband instead.
  • Cut off small sections of clothing first. You can always cut off more later.
