Step 1
Study the rules of the various pool games and study pool strategies. A lot can be learned by watching people play pool so study other players and watch televised pool tournaments. Study by reading books about pool strategy and by watching video tutorials.
-
Step 2
Join a pool league. A league provides instant access to advice and pointers from many different players. Leagues are also great for practicing, watching and studying more pool games.
-
Step 3
Purchase a cue stick. Try out different weights to determine if a heavier or lighter stick works better for you. It is always preferable to use the same cue stick every time rather than to adjust to whichever cue stick is currently available at the pool hall, because it is easier to focus on and perfect shots this way. Consistency is important.
-
Step 4
Make sure the cue stick has an adequate amount of chalk and be consistent with the stroke of the cue stick. A steady, even stroke will always result in a more accurate shot than a jerky stroke. Remember, a stroke can be soft, firm or anywhere in between yet still remain steady and even.
-
Step 5
Assume that the ball will go into the called pocket and always plan for the next shot. In other words, if there is an easy shot available but making that shot will not leave an opportunity for an additional shot, it is better to go for the more challenging shot that does leave an opportunity for an additional shot.
-
Step 6
Practice as frequently as possible. Practice with other players and practice alone. Practice breaking, banking and combo shots. Practice difficult shots over and over. There is no such thing as too much practice.
