How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant

A certified dental assistant is an important part of the dental team. Working closely with dentists, certified dental assistants prepare the instruments required to treat patients, handle patient charts, and help patients feel more comfortable. They earn a diploma or degree in a dental assistant program and take all certification exams required by their state.

Instructions

1. Take high school or college-level courses in chemistry, biology, health, and business. These courses will prepare you for the coursework you will encounter in a certified dental assistant program and will help you gain admission into an accredited dental assisting program. Take advantage of any anatomy and computer classes that your school offers.

2. Apply to a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. There are nearly 300 programs accredited by the commission (see resources). Most programs require applicants to have a high school diploma or GED as well as some science coursework. If your schedule doesn't allow you to attend a dental assisting program full time, look for programs that offer part time or evening classes.

3. Prepare to spend up to a year earning your certificate, diploma, or associate degree in dental assisting. Dental assisting programs involve time in the classroom, the laboratory, and in dental offices or clinics receiving hands on experience. You will learn dental terminology, basic record keeping skills, and patient care. Work as a receptionist in a dental office in your community to gain additional experience and skills. Complete all program requirements and graduate from the program in good standing.

4. Take the dental assisting certification exam offered by the Dental Assisting National Board, also known as the DANB. The certification exam is required by over thirty states. Although not all states require dental assistants to gain certification, becoming certified will increase your earning potential and give you more recognition in the workplace. A passing score on the exam will automatically certify you as a dental assistant.

• Beware of diploma mills that allow people to receive a diploma without taking any coursework.
