Make Sugar Cookies Without Vanilla Extract

Sugar cookies are simple yet elegant cookies that pack a lot of flavor with just a few ingredients. If you are craving something sweet, then realize you are out of vanilla extract, don't despair. These cookies can be made without vanilla extract and will taste absolutely delicious. Almost any flavoring can be added instead of vanilla, including almond, rum or lemon extract, depending on your taste.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 cup butter (1 1/2 sticks)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. almond extract
  1. Step 1

Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Set out three baking sheets; do not grease.

  2. Step 2

Stir dry ingredients together. Add the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and a pinch of salt to a medium size mixing bowl; stir together and set aside.

  3. Step 3

Beat the butter in a large mixing bowl for 1 minute. Add the sugar; beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and almond extract.

  4. Step 4

Add 1 cup of the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mix together with a mixing spoon. Add the other cup and mix together until well combined.

  5. Step 5

Roll a tablespoon of dough into a ball. Roll the ball in sugar and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Roll rest of the dough into balls in the same manner; make approximately three dozen.

  6. Step 6

Place 12 balls on a cookie sheet about 2 inches apart; press down on each ball with the buttered bottom of a drinking glass to flatten. (The butter keeps the glass from sticking to the dough.) Bake the cookies for approximately 10 minutes. Do not let the cookies brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of almond extract use 1 tsp. finely shredded lemon or orange peel.
  • Do not use margarine or butter substitutes!
