How to Cook Barley in a Rice Cooker

You can use your rice cooker for other grains besides rice. Barley is a whole grain that will contribute to the four servings of whole grains you should be getting daily.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rice cooker
  • 1 cup pearled barley and
  • 2 cups of water
  • or
  • 1 cup brown barley soaked overnight in
  • 2 1/2 cups of water
  • Optional: Pinch of salt
  1. Step 1

    If you are using pearled barley, add the 1 cup of pearled barley, 2 cups of cold water and a pinch of salt to your rice cooker.

  2. Step 2

    If you are using brown barley, soak the cup of brown barley overnight in 2 1/2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. This step can be done inside of the rice cooker.

  3. Step 3

    For both types, cook through one rice cooking cycle.

  4. Step 4

    After the cycle is finished, let the barley rest for 15 minutes.

  5. Step 5

    Fluff the barley with a fork and serve or use in your favorite recipes.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can soak the brown barley for one hour before cooking if you cannot do so overnight.
  • Do not leave the rice cooker unattended while it is on. Like any appliance, it is a fire hazard.
