Things You'll Need:
- All-purpose potting soil
- Bulb fertilizer
- Garden tools
-
Step 1
Start calla lilies inside in late winter for spring planting. Plant the rhizomes to a depth of 4 inches in all-purpose potting and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist until young shoots appear. Place in a sunny window and water on a regular basis allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Step 2
Move calla lilies outside to a sunny location when temperatures remain above 50 degrees at night. If planting in the soil, choose a location with well-drained soil that is slightly moist. The edge of ponds or streams is ideal, but swampy areas will cause the roots to rot and the plant to die.
-
Step 3
Apply bulb fertilizer monthly during periods of active growth. Calla lilies bloom approximately 8 to 11 weeks after planting, depending on the species. Cease fertilizing after blooming to allow the plant to rest.
-
Step 4
Dig the rhizomes in the fall if you live in a northern climate. Allow them to dry in a sunny location for several days. Store rhizomes in a dry area that maintains a temperature of 50 to 55 degrees. Plant in the spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
