Calla lilies are a tender perennial that originated in the tropical forests in southern Africa. These bold plants are noted for their glossy green leaves and striking blooms atop a single leafless shoot. Available in white and shades of pink, calla lilies are often used in wedding bouquets. Hardy in zones 7 to 10, calla lilies grow profusely and spread by an underground rhizome that looks like a thickened white root. When left unchecked, calla lilies quickly spread and can easily take over garden beds. In northern climates, calla lily can be grown in pots and summered outside or grown as a houseplant year round.

Things You'll Need:

  • All-purpose potting soil
  • Bulb fertilizer
  • Garden tools
  1. Step 1

Start calla lilies inside in late winter for spring planting. Plant the rhizomes to a depth of 4 inches in all-purpose potting and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist until young shoots appear. Place in a sunny window and water on a regular basis allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  2. Step 2

Move calla lilies outside to a sunny location when temperatures remain above 50 degrees at night. If planting in the soil, choose a location with well-drained soil that is slightly moist. The edge of ponds or streams is ideal, but swampy areas will cause the roots to rot and the plant to die.

  3. Step 3

Apply bulb fertilizer monthly during periods of active growth. Calla lilies bloom approximately 8 to 11 weeks after planting, depending on the species. Cease fertilizing after blooming to allow the plant to rest.

  4. Step 4

Dig the rhizomes in the fall if you live in a northern climate. Allow them to dry in a sunny location for several days. Store rhizomes in a dry area that maintains a temperature of 50 to 55 degrees. Plant in the spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
