How to Create a Peek-a-Boo Doll

A peek-a-boo doll is a little plush doll figure that sits on top of a fabric pocket that fits over your hand. When the fabric is folded inside out, there is another doll on the inside that pops up. There are several ways to make a peek-a-boo doll. If you're handy with a sewing machine, you can stitch up both the dolls and the reversible pocket/skirt that they sit on top of. But the easiest way to make a peek-a-boo doll at home is to start with an old ski hat, a bit of fabric and 2 tiny stuffed animals.

Things You'll Need

  • Ski hat
  • Stuffed animals or dolls
  • Old fabric
  • Needle and thread
  • Velcro (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Find an old ski hat at a thrift store. It should be one of those stretchy skull-cap type hats that stretches to fit tightly to the head. You can also pick up 2 small stuffed animals or dolls while you are there. They should only be about as tall as your finger.

    • 2

Attach one of the dolls to the top of the hat with a needle and thread. Sew along the bottom of the doll, attaching it to the seam along the center top of the hat. When it's finished, it should look like the doll is standing on top of the hat.

    • 3

Turn the hat inside out. On the inside, you can stitch or glue a swatch of old fabric, covering the entire interior and cut to fit. You will need to fold the fabric under at the hat's brim and sew a neat seam along the whole perimeter of the hat.

When the lining of the hat is complete, attach the bottom of the other stuffed animal to the top center of this side of the hat.

    • 5

Stick your hand in the hat and wiggle your fingers. Your animal will dance with the movement. Take your hand out, turn the hat inside out, and stick your hand back in. You'll have a new fabric on the outside and a new animal on the top to entertain the kids!

Tips & Warnings

  • A fun alternative is to stitch velcro to the bottom of each animal, and add velcro to the top of the hat. That way you can remove the animals and replace them with a variety of animals as you collect them!
