Things You'll Need:
- Detangling spray
- Leave-in conditioner
- Wide tooth comb
- Hair clips/hair ties
- Lightweight/medium hair spray
-
Step 1
Apply a conditioning detangling spray on clean wet hair. Using detangling sprays and leave in conditioners will keep your hair from becoming knotted or tangled and protects hair from heat damage. Be sure to comb the spray through your hair with a wide tooth comb and allow hair to dry.
-
Step 2
Divide hair into two sections, parting down the middle. Next, divide the two sections in half so you have four total sections of hair. Use hair clips or hair ties to secure hair. Because the hair is dense, parting the hair in this way will make it easier to access the entire head of hair with the curling iron.
-
Step 3
Apply a lightweight hair spray to each section. Since the hair is thick, it will need extra hold to keep the curl. You can apply hair spray to each section all at once, or apply as you use the curling iron from piece to piece.
-
Step 4
Curl the front pieces of your hair, curling a one inch section of hair at a time. Curl these one inch sections from the ends, winding the hair around the curling iron. Using more than a one inch section of thick hair will take longer and you may not achieve the type of curls you desire. Hold the curling iron in place for 10 to 15 seconds. Hold the curling iron in place for less time for a looser curl and more time for a tighter more spiraled curl.
-
Step 5
Continue around the entire head, curling small sections at a time. For hard to reach back sections of the hair you can either pull the sections forward over your shoulder or lean your head to the side so that the hair cascades downward making it easier to reach. Spray curls with a medium to heavy hold hair spray to ensure the curl holds.
