How to Dress in Emo Clothes

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, emo emerged as more than just a music genre. Emo became a type of fashion popular among teens and young men and women. There are several different things put together that make the emo look. Dressing in emo clothes is made easy by the fact that males and females wear many of the same items, just in different sizes. Here are a few tips to use when you want to dress in emo clothes.

1. Purchase a pair of black Converse Chuck Taylor low top shoes. If you want, you can add pink shoe laces to the shoes to add to the emo look. It's important that the shoes are authentic Chuck Taylors and that they are "worn in." To do this, you can either run out into a dirt-filled field or rub some dirt onto the shoes.

2. Wear knee high striped socks. You should look for socks with very loud colors, such as hot pink or neon green. These socks do not have to match the colors of your shoelaces or shirt.

3. Buy a pair of skinny jeans, preferably dark denim or black. These pants do not have to be name brand. The pants should be long enough that they go down to the rims of your shoes.

4. Find a studded belt and wear the belt with your skinny jeans. These belts come in numerous styles and colors. There is no one style or color associated with the emo look so you can have some fun when choosing your studded belt. You can also add a vanity belt buckle if you wish.

5. Wear tight band T-shirts. These shirts do not necessarily have to be bands that are known for playing emo music. Shirts depicting bands from the '80s are also acceptable. A good rule of thumb when picking out the size of the shirt is to go one size smaller than what you normally wear.

6. Look for different wrist bands. As with the studded belts, you can wear any type of wrist band that you like. Some wrist bands have the name of a band while others are multi-colored.

7. Find non-prescription (or prescription if you wear them) plastic framed glasses. The frames can be either square shaped or "cat's eye" shaped. Much like the wristbands and belt, you can choose any color for the frames when you dress in emo clothes.

8. Wear tight, zip-up hooded sweatshirts in colder weather. The sweatshirt can be either plain in color (such as hot pink) or a hooded sweatshirt from your favorite band. This sweatshirt should still be worn over a band shirt and should be the same size as the band shirt.

Tips & Warnings

• Put black eyeliner on whenever you dress in emo clothes. Usually, the black eyeliner is only worn on the bottom portion of the eyelid. Only use a small amount of eyeliner, though. Otherwise, you will have more of a goth look. Make things easy for yourself by shopping at stores that carry many different styles of emo clothes. Hot Topic may be the best example as the store sells band shirts, skinny jeans and plenty of emo accessories.
