How to Tell If You Have a Dooney Bourke Replica

Dooney & Bourke makes a wide range of accessories, but they are known for their purses and handbags. As Dooney & Bourke products are made from high-quality materials and with fine craftsmanship, it's no wonder that so many people seek to acquire them. As with most designer gear, there are many replicas on the market. If you have a Dooney & Bourke item but are unsure of its authenticity, you can take steps to tell if it is authentic. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the bag's hardware. All exterior hardware on authentic Dooney & Burke bags will be brass. This means all zippers, snaps, clasps and tags will be brass-colored. If any exterior hardware is silver, it is not authentic. Likewise, if any of the hardware appears cheap or flexible, it is not authentic.

    • 2

Look closely at the stitching on the purse. Dooney & Burke purses feature fine craftsmanship. If your bag features uneven, crooked or sloppy stitching, it is undoubtedly a replica. Look for any glue residue on the item. Fake purses are often glued together rather than stitched.

    • 3

Feel the bag's material. Most Dooney & Bourke bags are made from high-quality leather. If the leather on the purse feels cheap or imitation, you are likely not dealing with an authentic purse.

    • 4

Study the logo on the bag's interior. The stitching on the logo should be the same color as the stitching on the entire purse. If it is not, the purse is not authentic. Confirm that the logo matches the trademark Dooney & Bourke duck logo. If there are any variations, it is a replica.

    • 5

Find the registration number inside the bag. This number is always sewn in red, white and blue thread inside the bag. If the bag in question is missing a registration number, it is a fake.

    • 6

Check the trim on the purse. All Dooney & Bourke bags feature tan leather trim. If your purse features leather trim in any other color, it is a replica.

    • 7

Check photos of authentic Dooney & Burke purses. You can find photos at the company's official website, among other online locales. If you notice any difference between the authentic photos and your purse, you can rest assured your purse is a replica.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. While you can find deals on Dooney & Bourke purses, they rarely sell for well below market prices.

Eh... not all of the hardware is brass these days, sorry. I've bought authentic Dooneys straight from a Dooney retail store that didn't have brass fittings. Also, the tag inside the purse isn't always red, white and blue. I have several (bought direct from Dooney) that have beige/black tags.
