Stimulate the Scalp for Hair Growth

Many people want to grow longer hair or more hair. While the hair generally grows one-half inch each month, this rate depends on many factors such as generics, overall health and how well a person takes care of her hair. There are a few simple methods to stimulate the scalp which not only promotes hair growth, but also relaxes the head and neck muscles. While there are drugs on the market that can increase hair growth, for most people using at-home remedies are a safer and cheaper method.

Massage the scalp. This is the easiest way to stimulate the scalp. By massaging the scalp, the blood circulates more and brings much needed nutrients to the hair follicles where the hair grows. Massage also relaxes the head and neck. To massage the scalp, bend over at the waist. Spread the fingers out over the head with the thumbs at the base of the skill. Use gentle, circular motions. Massage for 1 minute a few times a day.

Brush the hair. Decades ago brushing the hair 100 strokes a night was common. While today some hair care experts feel that such brushing can damage the hair and scalp, if done properly brushing has benefits. Use a boar hair brush or other natural fiber. Boar head bristles are soft and gentle on the hair and scalp. By brushing, you stimulate the production of scalp oils which lubricate the scalp and the hair. This is a good thing for dry hair, because brushing adds more oils. But for oily hair, brushing can make your hair greasier. Also, only brush hair when it is dry, because wet hair is too fragile for brushing. Brush your hair starting at the scalp and moving down to the ends. Brush your hair as much as you want. But if you notice too much breakage, cut down on the amount of brushing or stop entirely.

Use essential oils on the scalp. There are several essential oils that are considered to be stimulating or invigorating. Lavender, basil, nettle, lemon and rosemary leaf oils are all herbal remedies for stimulating the scalp. These essential oils can be purchased online or at health food stores. You can use only one oil, or a few, if you choose. Apply a few drops to the scalp with an eye dropper. Massage over entire head. You can leave the oil on your scalp for an hour or overnight and wash out in the morning. With these oils you will feel your scalp tingling.

Keep scalp and hair clean. Washing your hair regularly removes dirt, debris and built-up oil residue. Shampooing also cleans any clogged pores on the scalp that may inhibit hair growth. The activity of washing the hair also massages and stimulates the scalp so new hair can grow more easily.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Make certain you are not allergic to any of the essential oils by doing a patch test first. Add a drop of the oil to your forearm and wait 24 hours to see if you have an allergic reaction.
