An old-fashioned percolator

While drip coffee makers are perhaps the most easily identifiable type of coffee maker, percolators were actually invented first. The percolator brews coffee by sending boiling water through a basket, where it filters through the coffee grounds. Making a pot of coffee with a percolator takes less time than using a drip machine. Instructions

    • 1

Open the percolator and take out the pump and basket, which will make adding the water easier.

    • 2

Add the desired amount of water by pouring until the level reaches the correct hash mark on the inside of the pot.

    • 3

Install the pump and basket in the pot.

    • 4

Put the paper coffee filter in the basket by lining up the hole in the middle of the filter with the stem of the pump. Then add the desired amount of coffee and fold the edges of the filter over the grounds by putting the holes over the stem of the pump.

    • 5

Put the percolator filter over the basket and close the pot with the lid.

    • 6

Plug in the percolator to start the brewing process. To keep the coffee warm, do not unplug the percolator when brewing is finished.
