Tired of smelling like everyone else? Bored with the perfumes offered in department stores? If you desire a unique scent that you personally have a hand in creating, then designing perfume is the way to go. It is relatively easy and involves trial and error. Think of yourself as a chemist mixing and matching to end up with a final product.
Perfume consists of three main notes: base, middle and top. The base is the scent that lasts the longest, and the top note is the first scent to fade. Examples of middle notes are lemongrass, ylang-ylang and clove. Examples of top notes are lavender, rose and jasmine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 empty glass jar
  • Small funnel
  • Essential oils
  • 2 to 3 different scents
  • Eyedropper
  • 3 oz. vodka
  • Distilled water
  • Stirrer
  • Perfume bottle with atomizer
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of effect you are going for with your perfume. If you want it to be energizing, use citrus scents. If you wanted it to be stimulating, use peppermint or eucalyptus, which are good for easing fatigue. Rosemary and basil are also stimulating scents but are a little more intense. If you are going for calming, try sandalwood or rose scents to ease tension and calm the senses. Additional calming scents are vanilla, jasmine or lavender, which combat stress.

  2. Step 2

Select and purchase the different oils and scents from a store. Usually these will be in the organic section or natural area of the grocery or body store. Select two or three different oils and scents to mix. Also purchase an essential oil (such as cedar, cinnamon or sandalwood), which helps the different bind together.

  3. Step 3

Pour the vodka into the jar.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze 7 to 9 drops of essential oil into the jar. Then squeeze 7 drops of your chosen middle note, followed by 7 to 9 drops of your top note.

  5. Step 5

Squeeze a couple drops of the essential oil to bind the different scents together. Leave mixture out for 20 to 30 hours. If you do not like how the fragrance smells, let the mixture sit longer and smell again. Once you like the way it smells, add the distilled water to the jar. Stir vigorously.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add some glycerin and stir vigorously to make your fragrance last longer. Pour into a pretty bottle with a spritzer top and spray away!
