Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Pencil
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Curtain rod and hardware
- Friend or family member
-
Step 1
Determine the placement of your curtain rod. This will depend on the length and type of curtain you have, as well as the look you are going for. No matter what type of curtain you are installing, though, be sure to place the rod at a height that allows the curtain to cover the top of the window.
-
Step 2
Place the curtain rod bracket on the wall and mark the screw holes with a pencil, then remove the brackets. Make sure that the bracket is mounted close to where the rod will end to ensure that the curtains have the maximum amount of space on the rod when hung.
-
Step 3
Use the stud finder to determine whether or not you will be drilling into a stud. If you don't find a stud in that location, you'll need to add a wall anchor for stability.
-
Step 4
Align your drill with the bottom mark and drill a hole for each screw. You don't need to drill very deep here, just enough to get the screw started.
-
Step 5
Hold the curtain rod bracket in place, then using your other hand drive the bottom screw into the wall. Use the level to check the alignment of the curtain rod bracket, then drive in the top screw while holding the bracket in place.
-
Step 6
Repeat previous steps for the opposite bracket.
-
Step 7
Place the curtain on the rod, then have your friend assist you in putting it onto the brackets. Attach the finials and adjust the curtains to give a finished look.
