Venetian masks, found in many costuming stores, are beautiful but often very expensive. A cheaper alternative is to make your own mask by purchasing a plain white mask and decorating it yourself. By decorating your own mask, you can make a mask that will go perfectly with your costume and costs only a fraction of the price of ones found in stores.
Things You'll Need
- Plain white half mask
- Fabric such as silk or satin
- Strong craft glue
- Craft scissors
- Decorations such as sequins, glitter, ostrich feathers and rhinestones
- Ribbon or chopstick for handle
Purchase a plain white half mask. You can find plain white half masks stocked at most party supply stores and costume stores; because they are undecorated, they are usually very cheap. The half mask you are looking for is the type that will cover the top half of you face, not one side of your face like the "Phantom of the Opera."
Decorate the mask using fabric. Before applying glitter or any other decorations, you need to create a background for the mask. Cover the mask with a beautiful fabric like silk or satin. Apply craft glue in dots to the mask and lay the fabric over the mask. Then simply cut away the excess fabric and be sure to glue down the edges of the fabric to the mask.
Add more decorations to your mask. Now you have a background you can start adding other decorations to such as glitter, sequins, rhinestones and ostrich feathers. Use pictures from the Venetian carnival to inspire you. Apply glitter by running the glue along the area where you want the glitter, and dusting glitter over the glue. Shake off the excess glitter.
Create a handle for the mask. There are two ways that a Venetian mask is held in place: it is either held to the face by ties, or it has a handle. If you want to use ties, you can either just use the elastic string that came with the half mask, or you can remove the string and in its place tie a piece of ribbon to each hole that held the elastic. Should you choose to use a handle, then you will need to decorate a chopstick using either paint or by wrapping a ribbon around it. Now attach the skinny end of the chopstick to either the left or right side of the mask, using craft glue.
Allow the mask to dry. Once the handle has been attached and all decorations are in place, you will need to wait for the glue to completely dry before wearing it. Let the glue dry overnight. Once you are sure it is dry, the mask is ready to be worn.
