Being able to afford health care is a concern of most Americans, but for college students who are already strapped for cash the concern can lead to sleepless nights. This is why more and more universities are making health care insurance plans available to their students at an affordable cost. It is important for students to take the time to carefully review and learn how to compare student health care plans.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Compare the premium amount. One of the biggest factors to consider when trying to choose a student health plan is how much you will have to pay to be covered. Premiums can vary from a few dollars each month to several hundred dollars. College students need to find a plan that they can afford.

  2. Step 2

Look at the amount and type of coverage offered. Each insurance company offers students different types and amounts of coverage. Students should check to see what health care services are covered, whether a co-pay exists for office visits, and what the deductibles and co-insurance levels are.

  3. Step 3

Determine if it works on campus. One of the great benefits of being a student is the fact that you have college health services on campus. While the college often provides free or reduced services, sometimes it must charge for testing or additional services. You should find a student health plan that is accepted at your college health service offices.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your parents have a family health insurance plan, you should check to see if you are covered under it if you are a full-time student.
