Step 1
Plan which day the parakeet is going to be relocated to his new home. For a quick trip across town, the budgie and his cage should be the last thing to be moved. Before the bustle of packing starts, the parakeet should be moved into a more quiet area of the house until the final move.

Step 2
Keep the excitement of the move to a minimum around the parakeet. Birds can sense change and are easily stressed by busy activity they do not understand. Locating the bird in a quiet area will keep the stress to a minimum.

Step 3
Decide whether the parakeet can be moved in the same cage he lives in or whether another cage will be needed. If another cage is going to be used, it is best to introduce the parakeet to the new cage as soon as possible. This way, the parakeet will not feel as much anxiety when on the road.

Step 4
Fill the spill-proof food and water dishes for the road trip. Place them in easy reach of the parakeet. The bird may or may not eat or drink, but it is still a good idea to have the food and water available.

Step 5
Wrap the mobile cage in a blanket before moving the bird outside to the vehicle. Even a small draft can cause a parakeet to catch cold. The addition of the blanket keeps drafts to a minimum. This should be done in the summer months as well as the winter months. Avoid traveling with the window open in the vehicle, if at all possible. The draft from the window can cause chills for the bird. Once a parakeet catches a cold, it is difficult to nurse it back to health.
