A slow metabolism can be caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, age, genetics, stress, or even thyroid problems. However, there are many ways to boost your metabolic rate naturally by making changes in your lifestyle, eating properly, eating metabolism boosting foods, and taking supplements.

From Quick Guide: Rev Up Your Metabolism
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green tea
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Multi-vitamins
  • Kelp
  1. Step 1

Eat several small, healthy meals throughout the day instead of one or two large meals. Snack often on fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains. This will keep your metabolism running at full speed and increase weight loss.

  2. Step 2

Eat breakfast every morning to jumpstart your metabolism. Your body has gone without food for hours and needs fuel to metabolize. Skipping breakfast will significantly slow down the metabolic rate.

  3. Step 3

Drink two to three cups green tea daily. Green tea contains catechin polyphenols, which alter chemical transmitters in the nervous system to burn more calories more quickly.

  4. Step 4

Add a dash of cayenne pepper to your meals. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which has metabolic boosting and fat burning properties. Eat with breakfast for best results and with other meals, if appropriate.

  5. Step 5

Take a multi-vitamin daily that contains vitamins B,C,D, and E. Take according to manufacturer directions. All of these vitamins have been proven to boost metabolism.

  6. Step 6

Add kelp to your meals. Purchase the herb in flakes or leaf form. Add to salads, soups, stews, sandwiches and casseroles. Kelp contains a significant amount of iodine, which is necessary for thyroid function. Consuming it regularly is another way to boost your metabolism.

Tips & Warnings
  • Green tea contains caffeine. However, you can find caffeine-free green tea if necessary. Try drinking one cup of green tea with each of your small meals throughout the day, and drink plenty of water in between meals. Although a multi-vitamin is helpful in boosting your metabolism the natural way, if you can get the vitamins your body needs from food this will increase your metabolic rate even more. Vitamin B is found in meat and eggs. Vitamin D is found in dairy products and fortified cereals. Vitamin C can be obtained from citrus fruit and Vitamin E from green vegetables, vegetable oils and nuts. Kelp supplements can also be taken if you can't stomach eating the plant. Look for these supplements in your local health food store, or online, and take according to manufacturer directions.
