Things You'll Need:
- Knife or scissors
-
Step 1
Choose the spot where you want your pants frayed. This is done most popularly at the knees and at the bottom of the pants. But you can fray several different sections of the same pair for a more dramatic look. You can fray in any direction.
-
Step 2
Lay the pants on a flat surface that won't be easily damaged. If your pants are wrinkled, iron them first.
-
Step 3
Fray the desired area of the pants with a knife or scissors. If you're fraying vertically, lay the knife or scissors longways across the pants and rub up and down in a vertical motion. To fray horizontally, rub the knife or scissors on the pants in a horizontal manner. The longer you do this, the more the top layer of cloth and stitching will wear off. Continue until you have the desired amount of fray, and stop.
-
Step 4
Put your pants in the washer and then the dryer. This will help the pants look more ragged by damaging the frayed spots a little more. Putting them through the wash-and-dry cycle stresses the worn stitches and pieces of fabric.
-
Step 5
Try the pants on. If you don't have as much fray as you want, repeat the process. But be careful so that you don't fray too much; you could end up with just a big hole in the pants instead of a frayed look.
