So you want to know how to install an internal DVD burner. Many older desktop computers came with CD burners or DVD drives. But, if you want to partake in the newer gaming technology on DVD or be able to burn your own movies, you will need to install a separate DVD burner.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Desktop computer
  • Internal DVD burner with its cables
  1. Step 1

Ensure your computer has an open drive bay. Check below your CD or DVD drive to see if there is a blank bay. You will see a rectangular piece of plastic the size of the DVD drive.

  2. Step 2

Unplug your computer and remove all cables, especially the power cable. Remove the cover by taking the screws out of the back or the side.

  3. Step 3

Set your DVD burner to "slave" mode if it has such settings. Refer to your manual on this.

  4. Step 4

Mount the DVD burner into the empty drive bay. First, push out the piece of plastic covering the bay. Then place the drive so it looks similar to your CD drive. Finally, screw it in place.

  5. Step 5

Check and see if the IDE cable coming out of your CD drive has an empty port. The IDE drive is wide, very thin and connects the CD drive to your motherboard. If so, simply connect that port to your DVD drive. If not, replace the CD drive's IDE cable with one that has a spare port; one probably came with your DVD drive.

  6. Step 6

Look for a connection to the power supply. This is usually a small white plastic piece with three or four metal prongs inside and multi-colored wires coming out the back. Connect this to the other port on the back of your DVD drive.

  7. Step 7

Put the cover back on your computer and start it up. Most computers will automatically detect the drive, and most Windows systems will install much of the software, though you might need to run your driver disc.
