How to Write a Personal Grant Request
Grants are usually monetary awards that you don't have to pay back. How cool is that? A personal grant request is almost identical to a grant request an organization would fill out, except for two very important details. First, you must show how much you personally need the grant award. This is usually accomplished by supplying facts and figures that support your need. Secondly, you must show how you, rather than someone else, would benefit by receiving the grant award.

1
Review the personal grant application or request form. If it is an online request form, read the entire form first before filling it out so you know exactly what the grant entails.
-
2
Determine if you are qualified to receive the grant award. For example, if the grant request application states that you need to be divorced and earning less than $30,000 per year, don't apply if you are not divorced. You will not only have wasted your time, you will have wasted the reviewer's time too. Your application or request form will be tossed if it isn't filled out correctly. If you qualify for the personal grant, move to Step 3.

3
Fill out a practice application on a separate sheet of paper or computer file. Don't leave anything blank--this is very important. If a question doesn't apply to you, write or type in "NA" or "Not Applicable." If you are asked for details concerning your need, provide facts and figures to support your need.
-
4
Tell about yourself or your situation in a compelling, friendly way if given the opportunity, and do so in the correct space. Don't beg, exaggerate or threaten. If the instructions forbid you to add a separate sheet to the application, then don't. However, if the personal grant request invites you to give more information about you or your situation, do take the time to supply this information. Personal information is your chance to stand out from other applicants.
-
5
Fill out the final request application, making sure it is free of spelling and grammar errors. It's important to stand out because of your need and qualifications, not because your request is a mess.
-
6
Make sure your completed grant request arrives at the correct destination by or before the application cutoff date. Excuses won't get your application reviewed.
