Make a Schedule for Kids

Make a Schedule for Kids thumbnail
Uh-oh, a missed a doctor's appointment!

It can be overwhelming to keep track of kids' schedules, so creating a schedule that everyone can see will help keep everyone on task and in the right place at the right time. Once a schedule is in place, everyone will be responsible for keeping up their own schedule, so it won't be mom's fault when someone misses an appointment, a practice or a chore.

Things You'll Need

  • Desk-sized monthly calendar
  • Different color marker for each family member

Instructions

    • 1

Have a family meeting to introduce the new schedule concept. Assure everyone that this new schedule will benefit everyone but only if each person remembers to update their calendar. Hand out colored markers for everyone and make a note on the calendar what each person's color is.

    • 2

Write your own schedule first so that everyone sees that you are serious about making the schedule work. Each person will follow, marking their own schedule.
Sort out conflicts as soon as you notice them and make a note of a change immediately.

    • 3

Include household chores for the kids on the calendar so they don't have the excuse that they didn't know or forgot. A parent will need to note doctor-type appointments for the child in their personal color marker.

    • 4

Post the calendar in a prominent location visible and accessible for all family members. It doesn't have to be in a conspicuous place if everyone knows that they are responsible for checking it and updating it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can offer some type of a reward for the family at the end of the month if everyone cooperates in keeping to the schedule. It could be as simple as going to the movies or having a pizza/movie night at home.
